when i sleep
by cher engmann
when i sleep is a sound piece composed of field recordings capturing what I hear when I sleep, alongside recordings of me reading from my dream journal. This sonic reconstruction of my sleeping brain explores dreams as a site of discernment, where I attempt to interpret signs, whether they emerge from ancestors, subconscious desire, or are shaped by community.
Cheris a Ghanaian-American artist and dancer working across performance, sculpture, sound, and video. Her work examines the ongoing deconstruction and reconstruction of her relationship to spirit and community while exploring what it means to return to the body.
